What Students Need to Do: Students explain why Georgia courts decide what state laws mean and settle legal disputes. They examine court scenarios, identify which purpose is shown, and explain when both purposes overlap.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can classify a court action and support the choice with details from the case. The student can explain how a judge’s reading of a law affects the outcome and the people involved.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think courts create laws or enforce them like police. They may also assume administering justice always means punishing someone, rather than hearing civil cases, protecting rights, and following fair procedures.
How to Assess It: Give students one scenario in which a Georgia judge clarifies an unclear law while deciding a case. Ask them to identify both court purposes and cite one detail for each.
