What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read population, climate, and physical maps of Africa together. They explain why people cluster near water, fertile land, coasts, and milder climates, while fewer live in deserts and dense rainforests.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify heavily and sparsely populated areas from a map. They support each pattern with geographic evidence, such as rainfall, rivers, elevation, temperature, or access to the coast.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all of Africa is hot, dry, and sparsely populated. They may describe where people live without explaining why, or claim that one physical feature determines every settlement pattern.
How to Assess It
- Display population and physical maps of Africa. Ask: Why is the Nile Valley more densely populated than the Sahara? Give two map-based reasons.

Ways to Teach It
Overlay transparent maps of rainfall, rivers, elevation, and population, then use sticky dots to mark places where the patterns match.
Write a claim explaining why West African coastal areas attract more settlement than the Sahara, using two pieces of map evidence.
Play a location card sort, matching African regions with climate and landform clues, then ranking them from most to least populated.
Choose a site for a new hospital in Kenya using population, road, rainfall, and elevation maps, then justify the location.
