Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify where government power is held and how citizens take part in decisions. They compare unitary, federal, and confederation systems, as well as autocratic, oligarchic, democratic, parliamentary, and presidential governments.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can classify a government from a short description and point to evidence that supports the choice. They can explain at least one similarity and one difference between two systems.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume federal always means democratic or that unitary always means autocratic. They may also confuse a president's title with a presidential system or treat every monarchy as an autocracy.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Give students two government profiles. Ask them to classify each by power distribution and citizen participation, then write one clear difference.

Lesson moves

Have pairs sort government description cards onto labeled mats for power distribution, citizen participation, and executive structure.
Ask students to write which system gives citizens the most direct influence, using two specific features as evidence.
Play Government Detective by reading scenario cards while teams identify the system and earn a point for naming the deciding clue.
Use short profiles of Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Iran to identify how leaders gain power and how citizens participate.
