What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how conflict, leadership changes, corruption, and weak public services can interrupt schools and block food or medicine. They support each link with evidence from a specific country or case.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can build a clear cause-and-effect chain from instability to disrupted roads, staffing, funding, or aid delivery. They explain how those disruptions affect hunger, disease, and school attendance.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Africa as one country or assume every African nation faces the same conditions. They may blame famine only on drought or assume donated supplies always reach communities.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit prompt: “Armed groups close a major road for one month. Explain one likely effect on schools, medicine, and food distribution.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a regional map, supply tokens, and road closure cards, then have them reroute food and medicine to schools and clinics.
Write a paragraph explaining why having enough food or medicine nationally does not guarantee that every community receives it.
