What Students Need to Do: Students trace how coups, civil conflict, corruption, or weak public institutions can disrupt schools, health care, jobs, utilities, and food access. They use country-specific evidence to explain links rather than make claims about Africa as a whole.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can build a clear cause-and-effect chain, such as political violence closing roads, limiting trade, and raising food prices. The student supports the claim with data or a reliable source and recognizes that effects differ by country and period.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat Africa as one country or assume every African nation is unstable and poor. They may confuse correlation with causation, or claim instability affects income only while ignoring health, education, safety, and services.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Read a brief profile showing a coup, school closures, falling employment, and rising food prices. Write one cause-and-effect chain using three details.

Lesson moves
