What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare colonial borders with ethnic, language, and political maps. They explain how imposed borders split some groups, combined others, and helped create later disputes over power, land, and resources.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use map evidence to build a clear cause and effect chain from colonial decisions to a later conflict. They also recognize that colonial borders were one cause, not the only cause.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all African borders are straight or that Europeans created every conflict. They may also assume ethnic diversity always causes war, rather than explaining how political decisions and unequal power increased tensions.
How to Assess It
- Give students a colonial border map and an ethnic group map. Ask them to identify one border problem and explain how it could contribute to later conflict.
