What Mastery Looks Like: Students can build a clear cause-and-effect chain from Ottoman defeat to European mandates, new borders, and regional tension. They support the explanation with examples such as Iraq, Palestine, or Kurdish communities.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think European partition caused every later conflict or that local groups had no role. They may also assume new borders matched ethnic, religious, and tribal communities.
How to Assess It: Give students prewar and postwar maps. Ask: “Name one border change and explain in two sentences how it could create conflict.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs printed maps, colored pencils, and yarn to mark new borders and communities split across countries.
Ask students to write: “Why might people reject a border created by a foreign government?” Use one historical example.
Run a cause-and-effect card sort using Ottoman defeat, mandates, competing promises, new borders, resentment, and conflict.
