What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate major oil reserves and compare countries with large, small, or few reserves. They explain how oil income can fund roads, cities, services, and industry. They also trace effects on trade, jobs, migration, foreign interest, and economic dependence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student uses a map or data table to show that Saudi Arabia has far greater oil resources than Israel or Turkey. The student connects that pattern to differences in revenue, infrastructure, trade roles, and economic choices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often assume every country in Southwest Asia has large oil reserves. They may treat oil wealth as automatic prosperity or claim Israel and Turkey developed mainly through oil exports. They may also overlook price swings and unequal access to oil income.
How to Assess It
- Give students an oil reserve map of Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Turkey. Ask: “Why did oil shape Saudi Arabia’s development differently from Israel’s and Turkey’s? Use two map facts and two economic effects.”

Give groups a blank map, oil reserve data cards, and ten counters, then have them model where wealth and infrastructure spending would concentrate.
Ask students to write: How can having little oil still shape a country’s trade, alliances, and investment choices?
Play a cause-and-effect card sort using oil reserves, export income, roads, migrant labor, price drops, and economic diversification.
