What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how the agreement lowers some trade barriers, sets shared rules, and provides ways to settle trade disputes. They connect these functions to choices, prices, and sales across the three countries.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain at least two agreement functions using a trade example. Given a product such as Mexican avocados, they can describe one benefit for buyers and one for sellers.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think free trade means all tariffs and trade rules disappear. They may overlook Canada or assume only businesses benefit. They may also confuse voluntary trade with one country forcing another to trade.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A Mexican company sells tomatoes to a United States grocery chain. Explain two ways the agreement could make this trade easier.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups product cards and tokens, then run two trade rounds with and without a tariff and compare who gains.

  2. Ask students to write: How can shared trade rules help a Mexican seller and a Canadian buyer?

  3. Play a card sort matching tariff reduction, shared rules, and dispute settlement to short trade scenarios.

  4. Examine grocery labels from Mexico and Canada, then trace how shared trade rules can affect store price and product choice.
