What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain that buying and selling goods between places gives producers more customers and consumers more choices. They trace how trade can increase production, shipping, jobs, and spending.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can use a U.S. and Europe example to identify what each side buys and sells. They can explain how the exchange creates related work and spending.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think trade only means swapping items without money. They may confuse imports with exports or assume that only one trading partner benefits.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A U.S. farmer sells cotton to a cloth maker in Europe. Name two kinds of economic activity created by this sale and explain each.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs product, money, ship, and worker cards, then have them build a trade chain between the U.S. and Europe.

  2. Ask students to write how buying European chocolate could affect a factory worker, truck driver, store owner, and customer.

  3. Play a matching game where students pair U.S. exports with European buyers, then name one job supported by each trade.

  4. Check labels on five classroom items, map their countries of origin, and discuss the work needed to bring each item to your town.
