What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that people trade because each participant expects to gain. They use shipping routes to show how lower travel time and costs can increase buying and selling.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a trade example, a student identifies what each side gives, receives, and gains. The student explains how easier shipping can increase production, sales, or jobs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think only the seller benefits, or that voluntary exchange means no money is used. They may assume a shorter route lowers every price or that a canal produces goods.
How to Assess It
- Ask: How can the Panama Canal help both a shipping company and a store? Explain in two sentences using time, cost, or sales.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a world map, string, and ruler to compare shipping routes from New York to San Francisco with and without Panama.
Write three sentences explaining why both a coffee farmer and a grocery store might agree to trade.
Run a card-trading game where students exchange unwanted resource cards, then tally how many students improved their sets.
Check labels on classroom items, map their countries of origin, and name the businesses involved in bringing one item to school.
