Students identify rights named in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. They explain how limits on government, due process, and courts help protect those rights.

A student can match a right to the amendment that protects it. The student can explain what government action is limited and how a citizen could challenge a violation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think rights allow any action without limits. They may also confuse constitutional rights with privileges, school rules, or responsibilities such as voting and obeying laws.

How to Assess It

Give students this prompt: “A town bans a peaceful protest because leaders dislike its message. Name the protected right and explain how the Constitution protects it.”

   Give pairs amendment cards and scenario cards, then have them match each situation to the right that protects the citizen.

   Ask students to write: “Why should government power have limits when citizens exercise their rights?”
