What Students Need to Do

Students explain the jobs of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches and how each branch can limit the others. They identify protections in the Bill of Rights and explain how those protections limit government power.

A student can match government actions to the correct branch and give an example of checks and balances. The student can apply a specific right to a simple situation and explain what the government may not do.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think one branch controls the other two or that checks and balances means every branch has the same job. They may also confuse rights with privileges or assume constitutional rights have no legal limits.

How to Assess It

Give students one scenario: Congress passes a law that violates freedom of speech. Ask them to name the branches involved, identify the protected right, and explain a possible check.
