Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify where everyday products were made by reading labels and locating places on a map. They sort products as made nearby, elsewhere in the United States, or in another country.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given several product labels, students correctly classify each product by where it was made. They can locate that place on a map and explain that stores sell goods from many places.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a product was made where it was purchased. They may also treat every United States product as local or confuse another state with another country.
How to Assess It: Display labels from a Georgia product, a product from another state, and an imported product. Students classify each and mark its origin on a map.

Lesson moves

Have pairs inspect clean product packages, find manufacturing locations, and place each package in Georgia, United States, or other country hoops.
Ask students to write: Why might a Georgia store sell bananas grown in another country and peaches grown nearby?
Play Origin Detective: read a product label aloud, then students hold up local, another state, or another country cards.
Students examine five lunchbox items, record each place of origin, and draw lines from Georgia to those places on a map.
