What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how citizens choose officials to represent them in government. They identify the executive, legislative, and judicial branches at the national and Georgia levels. They match each branch with its main job.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can name the president, Congress, and Supreme Court as national examples, and the governor, General Assembly, and state Supreme Court as Georgia examples. Given a government action, they can identify the correct branch and explain whether it makes, enforces, or reviews laws.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think representative democracy means every citizen votes on every law. They often confuse the president with the governor or Congress with the General Assembly. Some think courts make laws instead of reviewing them for fairness.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Name the three branches, state each branch's job, and list its national and Georgia example. Then explain how elected officials represent citizens.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use role, job, and level cards to build a chart matching each branch with its national and Georgia examples and responsibilities.

  2. Write: Why do citizens elect representatives instead of voting on every law, and how does that give citizens a voice?

  3. Play Branch Match, where teams match government action cards to executive, legislative, or judicial signs and explain each choice.

  4. Read a Georgia government news article, name the branch involved, and explain whether it is making, enforcing, or reviewing a law.
