What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students point to each of the five oceans on a world map or globe and say its name. They use nearby continents and the North and South Poles as location clues.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an unlabeled map, a student correctly labels all five oceans. The student can explain locations with clues such as beside Africa or around Antarctica.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may switch the Atlantic and Pacific or treat the two map edges as separate oceans. They may confuse the Arctic with Antarctica or overlook the Southern Ocean.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unlabeled world map and a word bank with the five ocean names. Ask them to write each name in the correct place.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a globe and five labeled sticky notes, then have them place each note on the matching ocean.
Ask students, "Which continents could you visit by crossing the Atlantic Ocean?" and record their answers with map evidence.
Play Ocean Point, calling an ocean name while students point to it on individual maps before a ten-second countdown ends.
Trace a pretend ship route from Georgia to Europe, then name the ocean the ship crosses.
