What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe objects moving and name the motion, such as straight, curved, back and forth, fast, or slow. They use words, drawings, and gestures to compare two motions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately describe the path, direction, and speed of a moving object. They compare two movements and support their answer with something they observed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all motion means moving forward. They may confuse speed with direction or describe the object, such as a red car, instead of describing its motion.
How to Assess It
- Roll one toy car straight and move another back and forth. Ask students to draw both paths and complete, “The motions are different because ____.”

Ways to Teach It
Set up ramps, balls, toy cars, and tops for students to test, then sort each motion as straight, curved, spinning, or back and forth.
Show two moving toys and ask, “How are their motions alike, and how are they different?”
Play Motion Charades by having students act out spinning, zigzagging, moving straight, moving fast, or moving slowly while classmates name the motion.
Watch playground movements, then have students describe how a swing, slide rider, rolling ball, and merry-go-round move.
