What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose whether to push, pull, roll, slide, or carry an object by noticing its shape, size, weight, and surface. They support their choice with an observation from a simple test.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select a workable way to move a familiar object to a target. They explain their choice using a feature, such as its round shape, heavy weight, or smooth surface.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose their favorite motion instead of using evidence. They may think every round object rolls well or that heavy objects cannot move. They may also confuse the object's surface with the floor surface.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a ball and a block. Ask, “What is the best way to move each object across the rug, and what feature helped you decide?”

Ways to Teach It
Set out a ball, block, toy wagon, and beanbag; children test pushing, pulling, rolling, and sliding each to a tape line.
Ask, “What is the best way to move this object, and what do you notice that supports your choice?”
Play Motion Match: students draw an object card and a motion card, test the pair, then keep it if it works well.
Compare moving a classroom chair, supply bin, and playground ball, then explain why each needs a different method.
