Georgia S2P2

S2P2 is a Georgia science standard. These are the elements under it.

• S2P2.a

  Plan and carry out an investigation to demonstrate how pushing and pulling on an object affects the motion of the object.

• S2P2.b

  Design a device to change the speed or direction of an object.

• S2P2.c

  Record and analyze data to decide if a design solution works as intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a force (a push or a pull).

What Students Need to Do

Students gather information from observations, pictures, and simple texts about pushes and pulls. They explain how force can start, stop, speed up, slow down, or turn an object.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly predict how a specific push or pull will change an object's motion. They support their explanation with an observation or detail from a source.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think objects move without a push or pull, or that every force makes objects move faster. They may confuse direction with speed or overlook forces that stop and slow objects.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a ball rolling toward a student. Ask, "How could the student change the ball's speed and direction? Draw and explain two actions."

   Roll a toy car across the floor, then use gentle and strong pushes to compare changes in speed and direction.

   Ask students to write how a soccer player can make a moving ball stop, speed up, or change direction.

   Play Force Charades, where students act out a push or pull while classmates name the expected change in motion.

   Observe playground swings and explain how pushes and pulls make them start, speed up, slow down, and stop.
