What Students Need to Do
- Students test a design that uses a push or pull to change an object's motion. They record results, compare trials, and use the data to decide whether the design worked.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can run repeated tests and record speed or direction changes in a simple table. The student uses the results to explain whether the design met its goal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any movement a success, even when it does not match the design goal. They may confuse speed with distance or judge a design from one trial instead of repeated results.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A bumper was designed to turn a toy car left. It turned left twice and went straight once. Did it work? Use the data.

Ways to Teach It
Build a cardboard bumper that redirects a rolling marble, run five trials, and tally whether the marble reaches a taped target.
Ask students, "Which result best shows your design worked, and what change would make it more reliable?"
Play Design Detective: teams inspect trial tables, choose the successful ramp or barrier, and cite two data points as evidence.
Test two paper fan designs on a cotton ball, then connect the results to how fans push air to move objects.
