The Standard
Evaluate historical models of how organisms were classified based on physical characteristics and how that led to the six kingdom system (currently archaea, bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how classification changed from visible trait groupings to models using microscopes, cell structure, and nutrition. They judge each model’s limits and explain why new evidence produced six kingdoms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place major classification models in sequence and describe the evidence behind each change. Given an organism, the student can compare its placement in older and later models.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think classification systems are fixed or changed only because scientists found more species. They often group fungi with plants and treat archaea and bacteria as identical because both are single-celled.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show a mushroom card and an archaean cell card. Ask how an early two-kingdom model might place each and what later evidence exposed its limits.

Sort organism cards by visible traits, then re-sort them using cell type, cell number, and nutrition; record which groups changed.
Write a claim explaining why fungi moved out of the plant group, using evidence about nutrition and cell structure.
Race teams to order Aristotle, Linnaeus, Haeckel, Whittaker, and Woese model cards, then match each revision to evidence available at the time.
Compare a mushroom label from an old plant collection with a modern database entry, then explain why the classification changed.
