What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and run a fair test using air, soil, and water under the same lamp. They measure temperature at set times and compare each material's heating rate. They use the data to explain which material heats fastest and slowest.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students keep the starting temperature, lamp distance, container size, and heating time the same. They record accurate data, graph temperature changes, and support a conclusion with specific measurements.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think equal exposure causes air, soil, and water to heat equally. They may compare only final temperatures and ignore starting temperatures or elapsed time. Some confuse temperature with the amount of heat transferred.
How to Assess It
- Give students a table showing five minutes of temperature data for air, soil, and water. Ask them to identify the fastest-heating material, cite two data points, and name one controlled variable.
