Georgia S5L3.b
The Standard
Develop a model to identify and label parts of a plant cell (membrane, wall, cytoplasm, nucleus, chloroplasts) and of an animal cell (membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus).
Georgia Standards of Excellence for Science · Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the parts of plant and animal cells.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build models of plant and animal cells and label the required parts. They show which parts both cells share and which parts appear only in plant cells.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly place and label each cell part on a model. They explain that both cells have a membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus, while plant cells also have a wall and chloroplasts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add a cell wall or chloroplasts to animal cells. They may confuse the cell wall with the cell membrane or treat cytoplasm as empty space.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw and label one plant cell and one animal cell without notes. Have them circle the parts found only in plant cells.

Ways to Teach It
Build plant and animal cell models with clay, placing the membrane inside the plant cell wall and labeling each required part.
Write two sentences explaining how a plant cell model is like an animal cell model and how it is different.
Run a cell-part card sort where teams place labeled cards onto blank plant and animal cell diagrams.
Compare microscope images of onion skin and cheek cells, then connect visible shapes to the labeled parts in student models.
