What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a model to track Earth’s tilted axis as Earth moves around the Sun. They explain how sunlight angle and day length produce seasonal changes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify when a hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the Sun. They connect higher-angle sunlight and longer days with summer, and lower-angle sunlight and shorter days with winter.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think seasons happen because Earth moves closer to or farther from the Sun. They may think Earth’s tilt changes during the year. Some confuse Earth’s daily rotation with its yearly orbit.
How to Assess It
- Give students a diagram showing Earth at two opposite points in its orbit. Ask them to name the season in one hemisphere and explain using tilt, sunlight angle, and day length.
