Georgia 7.PAR.4.1
The Standard
Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units presented in realistic problems.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Recognize proportional relationships in relevant, mathematical problems; represent, solve, and explain these relationships with tables, graphs, and equations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students divide one fractional quantity by another to find an amount for one unit. They write the rate with a clear label, such as dollars per yard or square feet per gallon. They explain what the value means in the situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct division order from the requested per units. They accurately divide fractions and mixed numbers, simplify the result, and attach correct units. They explain the rate in the context of the problem.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the division because they ignore the requested per unit. They may divide numerators and denominators separately or forget to convert mixed numbers. Some drop units or confuse square units with linear units.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A 3/4-pound bag of trail mix costs $2 1/2. Find the cost per pound and explain what your answer means.

Ways to Teach It
Set out ribbon pieces labeled with fractional yard lengths and fractional prices, then have pairs calculate and label each cost per yard.
Ask, When finding miles per hour, which quantity should be divided by which, and how do the units prove your choice?
Play a card match using situation cards, fraction division expressions, unit rates, and unit labels, with students defending each completed set.
Use a paint coverage label showing fractional gallons and square feet, then calculate square feet per gallon and gallons per square foot.
