Georgia 7.GSR.5.3
The Standard
Use facts about supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent angles in a multi-step problem to write and solve equations for an unknown angle in a figure.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve practical problems involving angle measurement, circles, area of circles, surface area of prisms and cylinders, and volume of cylinders and prisms composed of cubes and right prisms.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use angle relationships to connect several unknown angles in one diagram. They write and solve equations, then substitute the value to find the requested angle measure.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students mark equal angles and pairs that total 90 or 180 degrees. They write a correct equation, solve for x, substitute it back, and report the requested angle with clear reasoning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse complementary angles with supplementary angles or treat every adjacent pair as supplementary. They may mix up vertical and adjacent angles. Some stop after finding x instead of using it to find the requested angle.
How to Assess It
- Draw two intersecting lines. Label adjacent angles 3x + 10 and 5x - 30, then ask students to find x, all four angles, and name each relationship used.

Ways to Teach It
Cross two craft sticks, label angles with variable expressions, then rotate one stick and solve for each missing angle.
Show a worked solution that treats vertical angles as supplementary, and ask students to identify and correct the mistake.
Give pairs of diagram, equation, and solution cards for students to match, then have partners check each set.
Use a street intersection photo, label two angles with expressions, and calculate the remaining turn angles for drivers.
