Math4th GradeGeometric & Spatial Reasoning

The Standard

Recognize angles as geometric shapes formed when two rays share a common endpoint. Draw right, acute, and obtuse angles based on the relationship of the angle measure to 90 degrees.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize an angle as two rays meeting at one endpoint, called the vertex. They compare each opening to 90° and draw acute, right, and obtuse angles.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the vertex and two rays in an angle. They correctly classify and draw acute, right, and obtuse angles in different sizes and orientations.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think longer rays make a larger angle. They may also classify angles by direction or confuse acute and obtuse when angles are rotated.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Draw and label one acute, one right, and one obtuse angle. Circle each vertex and write less than, equal to, or greater than 90°.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Join two craft sticks with a brad, then adjust the opening to model acute, right, and obtuse angles beside a square corner.

  2. Show three rotated angles and ask, “How can you classify each angle without using its direction or ray length?”

  3. Play angle sort with cards showing varied angles, and have partners place each card under acute, right, or obtuse labels.

  4. Photograph corners around the classroom, then label each visible angle as acute, right, or obtuse and explain the choice.
