Georgia 7.GSR.5.1
The Standard
Measure angles in whole nonstandard units.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve practical problems involving angle measurement, circles, area of circles, surface area of prisms and cylinders, and volume of cylinders and prisms composed of cubes and right prisms.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students measure an angle by repeating one nonstandard angle unit with no gaps or overlaps. They count only whole units between the two rays.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose one angle unit and repeat it from one ray to the other without gaps or overlaps. They report the number of whole units and explain that smaller units require more repeats.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may judge an angle by ray length or the space it covers. They may change unit wedges, leave gaps, overlap pieces, or count boundary lines instead of units.
How to Assess It
- Give students one angle and a paper unit wedge. Ask them to measure it, label the whole-unit measure, and show each repeated unit.

Ways to Teach It
Cut identical paper wedges, then place them edge to edge to measure several classroom angles in whole units.
Ask students to explain why the same angle has different counts when measured with large and small unit wedges.
Play Angle Unit Match by pairing angle cards with the correct whole-number count of identical wedge pieces.
Measure the opening angles of scissors, book covers, and door hinges using one shared cardboard wedge.
