What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find missing values in ratio situations and choose a method that fits the numbers. They show how the two quantities scale together and explain why their answer makes sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly match corresponding quantities, find the missing value, and label the answer. They can use a ratio table, double number line, scale factor, unit rate, or equation and explain their choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may place unlike quantities in corresponding positions. They often use additive reasoning instead of scaling both quantities by the same factor. Some cross-multiply without checking whether the answer fits the context.

How to Assess It

Ask: “A paint mixture uses 3 cups blue for every 5 cups white. How much white is needed for 12 cups blue?” Require labeled work using any strategy.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups colored counters to build equivalent red-to-blue ratios, then record each set in a ratio table.

  2. Display two student solutions to the same problem and ask, “Which method is clearer, and how do you know both answers match?”

  3. Create proportion card sets with contexts, diagrams, tables, and equations for students to match in timed pairs.

  4. Have students scale a smoothie recipe for different group sizes, then calculate and label each new ingredient amount.
