What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers with a strategy they choose. They explain what each answer means and use these operations to solve word problems.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately solve multiplication and division problems with whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers using a strategy they can explain. They label answers, connect them to the problem context, and check whether results are reasonable.

Common Misconceptions

Students may multiply denominators during division instead of using the reciprocal. They may forget to convert mixed numbers, cancel across addition, or misread how many groups fit into a quantity.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket: “A 3 1/2-pound bag is divided into 1/4-pound servings. How many servings are made?” Require an equation, solution, and explanation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use fraction strips to model 1 1/2 divided by 3/4, then record the matching equation and explain the number of groups.

  2. Compare two solutions for 2 1/3 times 3/5 and write which strategy is clearer and why.

  3. Play a card-matching game with fraction expressions, visual models, word problems, and simplified answers.

  4. Scale a recipe for 2 1/2 batches, then calculate how many 1/4-cup scoops are needed for one ingredient.
