Georgia 5.PAR.6.1
The Standard
Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms by completing a table.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve relevant problems by creating and analyzing numerical patterns using the given rule(s).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students extend two number sequences from separate rules and line up matching terms in a table. They compare each row and describe a relationship that holds across the pairs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create both sequences accurately and align matching terms in a table. They state a relationship between each pair and verify that it works across the table.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may apply the rule to the term number instead of the previous term. They may compare terms from different rows or claim a relationship after checking only one pair.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Start both patterns at 0. Add 4 for Pattern A and 12 for Pattern B, list five terms, then explain how B relates to A.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters to build two growing patterns, record each stage in a table, and compare the matching amounts.
Ask students to write: How is the rule within each pattern different from the relationship between the two patterns?
Play Pattern Match with cards showing rules, tables, and relationship statements, then have students group the three matching cards.
Compare weekly savings plans, such as saving $3 and $6 each week, then describe how the totals are related.
