Georgia 4.PAR.3.1
The Standard
Generate both number and shape patterns that follow a provided rule.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Generate and analyze patterns, including those involving shapes, input/output diagrams, factors, multiples, prime numbers, and composite numbers.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students apply operations such as add 4 or multiply by 2 to create ordered number lists. They also build shape sequences by changing each stage in the same way.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a starting value and a rule, a student produces several correct terms and predicts a later term. The student also builds matching shape stages and explains what changes each time.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat the previous term instead of applying the rule again. They may confuse adding a fixed amount with multiplying, or count total shapes instead of new shapes.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Start at 4 and add 6 each time, then write the next five numbers and draw a matching tile pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 20 color tiles and rule cards, such as add three tiles, then have them build and sketch five stages.
Ask students to explain how start at 2, add 4 differs from start at 2, multiply by 4.
Play Pattern Relay, where teams draw a rule card and take turns adding the next correct number or shape stage.
Track seats in theater rows that increase by two, then predict the number of seats in later rows.
