What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a diagram, ruler, grid paper, manipulatives, or calculator will make a problem easier to solve. They use the chosen resource correctly and explain why it fits the task. They also check that the result makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare available resources, choose one based on the problem, and use it accurately. The student can switch approaches when the first choice is inefficient. Answers include a brief explanation and a reasonableness check.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab a familiar tool without considering whether it fits the problem. They may trust a calculator result without estimating or checking their entries. Some think every problem requires a physical tool.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A 12-foot by 9-foot floor needs one tile per square foot. Choose grid paper, a ruler, counters, or a calculator, find the number of tiles, and explain your choice.

Ask students to write: Which tool best helps compare 3/4 and 5/8, and why is it better than the others?
Play Tool Match with problem cards and tool cards; students earn a point for a sensible match and a clear reason.
Have students plan a classroom garden from a scale drawing, choosing rulers, grid paper, or a calculator to determine dimensions and cost.
