What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select tools that fit a math problem, such as blocks, rulers, number lines, grid paper, or calculators. They use the tool accurately and explain why it was helpful.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose an efficient tool without prompting and use it correctly. They explain their choice, check the result, and switch tools when the first choice is not helpful.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the most familiar tool rather than the one that fits the problem. They may also assume a calculator guarantees a correct answer or use rulers and number lines inaccurately.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A ribbon is 74 centimeters long. You cut off 28 centimeters. Choose a tool, solve, and explain why your tool helped.”

Ways to Teach It
Set out base-ten blocks, rulers, number lines, and grid paper, then have students solve task cards and record which tool they chose.
Ask students to write: “Which tool would you use to solve 6 × 24, and why is it better than another choice?”
Play a tool-match relay where teams pair problem cards with tool cards, then earn a point by explaining each match.
Give students a grocery flyer and a $20 budget, then let them choose tools to find possible purchases and check their totals.
