Georgia 3.MDR.5.4
The Standard
Use rulers to measure lengths in halves and fourths (quarters) of an inch and a whole inch.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve real-life, mathematical problems involving length, liquid volume, mass, and time and analyze graphical displays of data to answer relevant questions.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students line up an object with zero on a ruler and find where its other end lands. They read and record lengths to the nearest whole, half, or quarter inch.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place an object at zero, read the ruler marks correctly, and include inches in the answer. They report measurements such as 3 inches, 3 1/2 inches, or 3 1/4 inches.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may start at the ruler’s edge instead of the zero mark. They may count tick marks rather than spaces, or confuse quarter-inch and half-inch marks.
How to Assess It
- Give students a ruler and a paper strip. Ask them to measure it, record the length, and label the nearest quarter inch.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs rulers and paper strips to measure, record, and sort by whole-inch, half-inch, or quarter-inch lengths.
Ask students to explain why counting spaces on a ruler gives the correct length while counting tick marks may not.
Play Measurement Match by pairing object cards labeled with lengths to ruler diagrams showing the same measurements.
Measure classroom supplies, then choose whether whole, half, or quarter inches gives a useful description for each object.
