The Standard

Determine the area of rectangles (or shapes composed of rectangles) presented in relevant problems by tiling and counting.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Identify area as a measurable attribute of rectangles and determine the area of a rectangle presented in real-life, mathematical problems.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students tile rectangles with equal-size squares and count the squares to find area. They also split shapes made of rectangles into smaller rectangles and combine the square-unit counts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students cover or partition a rectangle with equal-size unit squares, then count every square once. For a shape made of rectangles, they find each section’s area and combine the counts correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count only the tiles along the edges instead of all tiles covering the surface. They may leave gaps, overlap tiles, or count shared tiles twice in a shape made of rectangles.

How to Assess It

Give students a drawing of an 8-unit by 3-unit garden divided into unit squares. Ask them to find the area and explain how counting the squares proves their answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs square tiles and paper rectangles, then have them cover each rectangle without gaps or overlaps and record the area.

  2. Show two tiled rectangles with the same area and ask students to write how they know the areas are equal.

  3. Play Area Match by pairing cards showing tiled rectangles, composite shapes, and matching area totals.

  4. Measure a classroom tabletop with paper unit squares, then estimate how many squares would cover a larger table.
