Georgia 6.GSR.5.1
The Standard
Explore area as a measurable attribute of triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons conceptually by composing or decomposing into rectangles, triangles, and other shapes. Find the area of these geometric figures to solve problems.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students split polygons into rectangles, triangles, or other familiar shapes. They find each smaller area, then add or subtract areas to get the whole figure. They use their calculations to solve geometric problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students draw lines that divide a polygon into familiar shapes without gaps or overlaps. They find each smaller area, combine the results correctly, and label the answer in square units. They can explain why a different decomposition gives the same total area.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add side lengths and find perimeter instead of area. They may forget to divide by two for triangles or count overlapping sections twice. Some use linear units instead of square units.
How to Assess It
- Give students an L-shaped figure made from an 8-by-6 rectangle with a 3-by-2 corner removed. Ask them to find the area and show how they decomposed the figure.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs grid-paper polygons to cut into rectangles and triangles, then rearrange and calculate the total area.
Ask students to compare two decompositions of the same polygon and explain in writing why both methods give the same area.
Play Area Match by pairing composite-shape cards with decomposition diagrams, calculations, and correct area cards.
Have students sketch a classroom floor plan, divide it into rectangles, and calculate the floor area needed for new carpet.
