Expectations in This Standard
3.GSR.7 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- 3.GSR.7.1
Investigate area by covering the space of rectangles presented in realistic situations using multiple copies of the same unit, with no gaps or overlaps, and det...
- 3.GSR.7.2
Determine the area of rectangles (or shapes composed of rectangles) presented in relevant problems by tiling and counting.
- 3.GSR.7.3
Discover and explain how area can be found by multiplying the dimensions of a rectangle.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize area as the amount of surface inside a rectangle. They find it by counting equal square units or multiplying side lengths, then label the answer in square units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose the needed dimensions from a diagram or word problem and multiply length by width. They explain how the product represents rows of unit squares and include correct units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse area with perimeter, add side lengths, or count only the border squares. They may use unequal tiles or report linear units instead of square units.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A garden bed is 6 feet long and 4 feet wide. Find its area, draw a matching square-unit array, and label the answer.

Ways to Teach It
Cover a 4-by-6 index-card rectangle with one-inch tiles, count the tiles, and connect the rows to multiplication.
Write: How are area and perimeter different for a 3-by-8 rectangle? Use a labeled sketch to support your answer.
Play Area Match: students pair rectangle diagrams, dimensions, multiplication equations, and area labels from shuffled card sets.
Measure a classroom tabletop to the nearest foot or inch, then calculate how many square units cover its surface.
