What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students count the value of mixed coins and make the same amount using different coin combinations. They solve buying and payment problems with coins and dollar bills, then use $ and ¢ correctly.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students count mixed coins accurately by starting with the greatest value and counting on. They show more than one way to make an amount and label answers correctly with $ or ¢.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count the number of coins instead of their values. They may confuse nickels and quarters, count mixed coins in random order, or use $ and ¢ together incorrectly.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: “Show two coin combinations for 63¢, then write the total value of one dollar, two dimes, and four pennies.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs coin cups and amount cards; students build each amount two ways, count aloud, and record both equations.

  2. Ask, “Mia made 47¢ with five coins; what coins could she have used?” Students write and compare possible answers.

  3. Play Coin Target: draw a card under 100¢, then race to make the amount with the fewest coins.

  4. Set up a class store with prices and dollar bills; shoppers choose coins for exact payment and write each purchase total.
