What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize a quarter and know it is worth 25 cents. They compare the values of common coins and place them in order from least to greatest value.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies a quarter and states that it is worth 25 cents. The student orders pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters by value and explains comparisons using cents.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a larger coin is always worth more, so they rank a nickel above a dime. They may confuse a quarter with a nickel or say a quarter is worth 20 cents.
How to Assess It
- Give students pictures of the four coins and ask: “Label the quarter, write its value, then order all four coins from least to greatest value.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs plastic coins to sort from least to greatest value, then match each coin to a value card.
Ask students to explain why a dime is worth more than a nickel even though it is smaller.
Play Coin War with coin cards, where partners reveal one card and the player with the greater value keeps both.
Set up a classroom shop with items priced at 1, 5, 10, and 25 cents, then have students choose the matching coin.
