What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read clocks, find elapsed time, and count groups of coins or bills. They use addition or subtraction to answer everyday questions and label answers correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a schedule or purchase problem, students identify what they need to find and calculate accurately. They label answers with minutes, dollars, or cents and check that the result makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the hour and minute hands or treat an hour as 100 minutes. They may count coins instead of coin values. They may also mix up the dollar and cent symbols.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: A store opens at 2:10 and closes 30 minutes later. A notebook costs 65¢. Does two quarters, one dime, and one nickel pay for it?

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs play coins, price tags, and geared clocks. Students build each price, then show the listed store opening or closing time.
Ask students to write how they know whether 75 cents and three quarters are equal, then compare explanations with a partner.
Play Time and Money Match. Students pair clock cards with time clues and coin cards with matching values.
Use a classroom snack menu and daily schedule. Students choose an affordable snack and calculate how long remains before recess.
