What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice who is in a story, where it happens, and what happens in order. They use drawings, speech, or writing to create a simple story.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify the character, setting, and major events in a familiar story. They can draw, dictate, or write a simple story with events in a clear order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name objects in a picture instead of telling connected events. They may list events out of order or leave out who and where.
How to Assess It
- Give students three picture cards showing a simple event. Ask them to order the cards and tell a story that names the character, setting, and events.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs three picture cards to arrange, then have them use puppets to act out the character, setting, and events.
Read a short picture book, then ask, “How did the character’s actions change what happened next?”
Play Story Circle by having each student add one event while the class checks that the events stay in order.
Have students tell about a familiar routine, such as getting ready for school, using first, next, and last.
