What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to stories from different cultures and compare the characters, actions, feelings, problems, and experiences. With questions or picture supports, they tell what is alike and different.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students name a clear similarity and difference between characters or their experiences. With prompting, they point to an event, action, feeling, or story detail that supports each comparison.

Common Misconceptions

Students may retell each story instead of making a comparison. They may focus only on clothing or appearance, or assume that different means better or worse.

How to Assess It

After two read-alouds, ask, “How are the characters’ experiences alike, and how are they different?” Students draw one similarity and one difference, then explain each aloud.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place character and event picture cards from two stories into labeled Venn diagram hoops, then explain where each card belongs.

  2. Ask, “How did each character solve a problem?” Have students draw both responses and dictate one comparison sentence.

  3. Play Same or Different: show paired story scenes, and students hold up matching cards before naming the detail they noticed.

  4. Compare a celebration, meal, or family routine in both stories with students’ experiences, while noting that families may do things differently.
