What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to or read stories from different cultures and notice what characters do, feel, and experience. With teacher prompts, they identify similarities and differences using story details.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place story details on a Venn diagram with at least one accurate similarity and difference. The student can explain each choice using an event from the stories.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare only pictures, clothing, or settings instead of the characters’ experiences. They may name only similarities or assume every person from a culture has the same experiences.
How to Assess It
- Give students two illustrated story summaries. Ask them to complete: “Both characters ___, but only ___.”

Ways to Teach It
Place character and event cards into two overlapping hoops, then have students explain which details belong in the middle.
Ask, “How did each character respond to a challenge, and what was alike or different about their responses?”
Play Character Match, where students pair characters from two stories and earn a point by stating an accurate similarity or difference.
Compare each character’s family routine with a familiar routine, while reminding students that families within any culture have different experiences.
