What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify meaningful similarities and differences in stories from different cultures. They compare characters, settings, events, or messages and support their thinking with details from each text.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students make clear, accurate comparisons using details from both texts. They explain how a character, setting, or event helps communicate each story’s central message.

Common Misconceptions

Students may retell each story separately instead of making direct comparisons. They may confuse a topic with a central message or make broad claims about a culture based on one story.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Name one similarity and one difference between the main characters in today’s two stories. Support each point with a specific story detail.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place character and event cards from two folktales in overlapping hoops, then add page-number evidence beside each card.

  2. Write: How do the main characters respond differently to similar problems, and what do their choices reveal about each story’s message?

  3. Play Comparison Match by pairing detail cards from two stories and labeling each pair alike, different, or unrelated.

  4. Read two children’s accounts of a shared tradition, then compare the settings, actions, and meanings without treating either account as universal.
