What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell who a story is about and where it takes place. They name the big things that happen and explain how those parts build the story.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name the main character, the place or time, and the major events in a familiar story. They use words or pictures from the book to support their answers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name every person or detail instead of the main character or big events. They may confuse the setting with an object, or tell events out of order.
How to Assess It
- After a picture book read-aloud, ask: “Who is the story mostly about? Where does it happen? What is one big event?”

Ways to Teach It
After a read-aloud, students sort picture cards into character, setting, and event hoops, then explain one choice.
Have students draw the character and setting, then tell a partner the biggest event and why it matters.
Play Story Detective by revealing one book illustration at a time and having students identify characters, setting clues, and possible events.
Use a playground photo to invent a story, naming who is there, where it happens, and one major event.
