What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find who is in a story, where and when it happens, what happens, and which words are spoken. They explain how those choices help readers understand the story.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name the main characters, describe where and when the story happens, and recount the events that drive the plot. They can locate dialogue and explain what it shows about a character or event.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse dialogue with the narrator’s words or call every action a major event. They may name only the place as the setting and leave out time clues.
How to Assess It
- After a short read-aloud, ask students to name the main character, setting, one major event, and one line of dialogue. Have them explain what the dialogue reveals.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs story cards from a familiar tale, then have them sort the cards by characters, setting, major events, and dialogue.
Read two lines of dialogue and ask, “What do these words show about the speaker, and how do they change the story?”
Play Story Detective: teams earn a point by finding a named story feature on a page and explaining its job.
Show a comic strip and have students label the setting, speakers, major event, and clues carried by speech bubbles.
