What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students track techniques such as dialogue, pacing, description, point of view, and foreshadowing across a text. They explain how those choices shape events, reveal characters, and build the setting.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify techniques in several passages and explain what each one reveals or changes. They connect the author’s choices across the text using clear evidence and reasoning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name dialogue, description, or foreshadowing without explaining its effect. They may use one example instead of tracing how a technique works across several parts of the text.
How to Assess It
- Give students two excerpts from different parts of one story. Ask them to identify a shared technique and explain how both uses develop the plot, a character, or the setting.

Ways to Teach It
Have groups color-code dialogue, description, pacing, and foreshadowing in a printed story, then label each technique’s effect.
Ask students to write: How does the author’s use of dialogue change one character from beginning to end?
Play an excerpt sorting game where teams match passage cards with technique cards and defend each match using the text.
Compare a story scene with its film version, then explain how each version develops setting or character through specific narrative choices.
