What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students help create simple rules for reading and writing together. They take turns sharing their work, listen to classmates, and give kind, useful comments. They also respond when peers ask questions or offer ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student follows agreed routines during a class sharing circle. The student shares work clearly, listens without interrupting, and gives a kind, specific comment. The student can answer a peer's question.
Common Misconceptions
- Children may think listening means staying quiet without looking at or thinking about the speaker's work. They may give vague praise, interrupt, or treat feedback as criticism.
How to Assess It
- Have each child show a drawing or sentence to a partner. Check whether partners take turns, name one detail they notice, and answer politely.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups picture cards showing listening, interrupting, sharing, and grabbing, then have them sort the cards into helpful and unhelpful behaviors.
Read a short class book, then ask, "What can we do so everyone gets a turn to share an idea?"
Play Feedback Toss, where children pass a soft ball and name one detail they noticed in a classmate's drawing or sentence.
Create an author chair like a library reading event, with one child presenting work and classmates asking prepared questions.
