What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students help create and follow clear routines for reading and writing together. They discuss texts, share their own writing, listen carefully, and give useful feedback. They respond to feedback by asking questions or making a change.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students follow agreed routines during partner and group sharing. They refer to details from texts, listen without interrupting, give specific feedback, and explain how they will use a suggestion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think feedback means correcting every mistake or simply saying, "I like it." They may interrupt, defend their work immediately, or ignore suggestions instead of listening and choosing a useful next step.
How to Assess It
- Have each student share four sentences of writing with a partner. Listen for the partner to give one specific compliment and one helpful question, then ask the writer to name a next step.

Ways to Teach It
Sort behavior cards into “helps our group” and “hurts our group,” then use the helpful cards to create a class norms chart.
After a read-aloud, ask, “Which character choice would you discuss with a partner, and what detail supports your thinking?”
Play Feedback Match by pairing sample writing with specific comments, questions, or suggestions that would help the writer improve.
Study an editor’s note from a class newsletter, then practice giving similar feedback on a partner’s short article.
